My choreographies have been programmed at the Centre National de la Dance Paris, ImpulsTanz Vienna, Spielart festival Munich, Ignite! Festival of contemporary dance Delhi, Singapore International Festival of Arts, Gothenburg Dance- and Theatre festival and at the Swedish biennial for performing arts. My work is also represented at the Performing arts museum, Dance museum in Stockholm and in the book Oxford Dictionary of Dance and Re-enactment. &nbsp; Memory and archive is a recurring thematic in my work, firstly through a reconstruction of my inheritance of Kurt Jooss’ last choreography, Dixit Dominus, created for the Swedish based Indian dancer Lilavati, and later as a second order performance, a performance about the performance, Future Memory. In An evening with Astad I performed together on stage with Astad Deboo, a pioneer of Indian contemporary dance and took a closer look at his early avantgard solos from the 1970-80s. My latest work Memory Lab explores how the audience can embody other people's memories. I’ve also participated in the curation of Ong Keng Sen in the Archive Box, an exchange between Japanese dance makers and artists of the Indian contemporary dance scene. Guided by trans* dancer and choreographer alex blum, we invite you to join a workshop for the speculative exploration of queer movements and ephemeral memorials. We will be working with the archives of Nordic queer liberation, for instance the history of the Danish Gay Liberation Front and their activism against the so-called ‘Dance Ban’, which for decades forbade same-sex couples from dancing together in the public sphere. In this work sharing, alex will share excerpts and reflect upon their artistic research series PÅ TRODS, which seeks performative methods to commemorate queer movements in both history and futures. As a series of ephemeral memorials to a past of forbidden caresses and a future of tender touches, PÅ TRODS is meant to commemorate the dance actions of the Danish Gay Liberation Front and other queer movements in spite of repression and queerphobia. She is on the research team of the project Border-Dancing Across Time (Austrian Science Fund/FWF P 31958-G) at the University of Salzburg, and is co-organizing CHAKKARs - moving interventions to facilitate intersectional anti-racist, postmigrant, and decolonizing approaches to dance. Ray is known for his strong non-linear artistic interpretation which embodies subtle provocations using movement and visual imagery. His work is evoked from personal stories emanating from colourful lived memories as a Filipino ‘balikbayan’ to surface stories of (trans-)formed identities in order to confront the audience with the affects of subtle discrimination, queer acceptance, and topical social discourse.Founding member of P-noise collective which is based in Copenhagen Denmark. In my work Future Memory (2012/2014), memories are processed from a postcolonial and highly personal perspective where the intersections of the meetings between Western dance canon and an Indian contemporary and traditional dance are explored.&nbsp; How can dance, movements or rather memories of movements be inherited and carried on? These questions filter through my work, An evening with Astad, where I, together with Astad Deboo, 72, a pioneer of contemporary Indian dance, explore histories and memories. An evening with Astad had its 2017 premiere in Lund and played last summer in Munich within a project on post-migrant dance. Memory Lab explores how memories can live on and be embodied with the help of the audience members. Rejoice in swinging on swings, dancing and singing some native and not so native songs from the region of Kerala, playing games and having a sumptuous vegetarian meal on a banana leaf - Sadya. “Ett av mina vackraste dansminnen är när jag dansar med min farmor under firandet av Onam i Kerala, Indien för nästan femton år sen. Min farmor fyllde samtidigt 90 år. Och det var första gången jag var med och firar denna högtid. Onam infaller lite olika i förhållande till vår kalender. Den bestäms enligt malayalam kalendern som i sin tur följer rörelserna i himlen, månen och stjärnornas förhållanden. Men högtiden infaller alltid i slutet av regnperioden, så allt är grönt, frodigt och solen har inte hunnit göra det brännande hett. Klimatet bjuder in till festligheter. Detta var första gången som alla min pappas syskon var samlade samtidigt som jag var där. Alla hade klätt sej fina. Vi hade traditionsenligt hängt upp en gunga mellan kokospalmerna. Vi turades om att gunga varandra däri. Musiken spelade från en skraltig högtalare. Plötsligt reser sej farmor och börjar dansa - och jag minns att alla försöker få stunden att vara så länge som möjligt Nu har sökandet påbörjats, en upptäcktsfärd i delad dans.”Rani Nair “One of my most beautiful dance memories is when I danced with my grandmother during the celebration of Onam in Kerala, India almost fifteen years ago. My grandmother turned 90 at the same time and it was the first time I was there to celebrate this holiday. Onam is celebrated at different timings every year, in relation to the western calendar. It is determined according to the Malayalam calendar which follows the astronomical and astrological positions of the moon and stars. However, the holiday always falls towards the end of the monsoon season, so everything is a lush green, and the sun has not had time to make its scorching presence felt. Thus creating an inviting atmosphere for the festivities. There were marigolds hung everywhere and the smell of jasmine was in the air. This was the first time all of my dad’s siblings were at the same place at the same time! Everyone was dressed in festive clothing, beautiful white saris with gold borders and crisp white mundus. According to tradition, there hung a swing between the coconut trees. We took turns rocking each other in it. Festive Malayalam songs played from a loudspeaker. The piece focuses on the experimental 1970s and ‘80s solos of Astad Deboo, a pioneer of contemporary Indian dance who just turned 70 and whose career spans almost fifty years and five continents. On stage with Deboo, I take on the role of an archivist and biographer, cataloguing Deboo’s choreography and stories, and finding new ways to share those with an audience. Deboo explains that technology and money meant his earlier work was never recorded, but “now Rani turns the clock back and ...it’s amazing to see how much the body remembers.”&nbsp; The relational duet form of An Evening with Astad offers a new point of access to this formidable artist — the who of a life story, rather than the what. Future Memory (2012) returns to Dixit, this time focusing not on the choreography but on the stories around it. It is a second-order performance — a performance about a performance — that uses the personal responsibilities of inheritance to move towards larger questions of history, memory, and legacy. A review from the premiere described it as combining “Humor, warmth, and intellectual sharpness, all in one.” With a combination of gentleness and challenge, Future Memory embraces the possibility of an alternaive history, one in which a “minor” dance takes ten years of another artist’s life, and where insider and outsider are more complicated than we might think. Here both identity and dance history are understood not in terms of Indian versus Western European, but in a hybrid way that uses real and imagined archives to allow for shades of Indianness, Swedishness, and Germanness.&nbsp;Nair’s one-hour solo uses dance, spoken text, film, and singing in more and less spectacular forms. There are moments when audiences are invited to touch and smell. A decolonizing and queer feminist mapping. Together with the art duo aghili/karlsson, Finding Sisterhood presents Correspondence / Finding Sisterhood / Online Space - an online venue with more than 30 unique works made for the Art Group Ful and Finding Sisterhood.The audience navigates between performances in the public space, artist talks, dreams of a better art scene and tributes to some of the artists who’ve changed the dance and performance scene forever. Three performers and a DJ invite you to dance and listen to memories of dance, in a room inspired by queer clubs and separatist parties where everyone gets to dance for and with one another. The work is also a tribute to the two influential and well-known American-Iranian choreographers Jamileh and Mohammad Khordadian, who have encouraged millions of people all over the world to dance. Their important work has expanded the boundaries for what dance can do and mean to people. For many, they have also been influential in framing a dance created in diaspora. With this performance we invite you to a space for dance and interaction that challenges and overthrows traditions and norms in the field of dance and Western performing arts. Through the popular dance of baba karam, with queer desires always present, we also want to explore drag from a perspective that does not necessarily reproduce the given truths of a white, Western drag tradition. We welcome expressions and traditions created within the diaspora and the decolonial field of thinking and art making.
